Deep in Seoul, with HWAN | HWAN

HWAN, producer, DJ and co-founder of DnB Seoul, talks us through Seoul’s tight-knit, fast-rising drum and bass scene that's been around for 20 years, and growing fast.

HWAN is a producer, DJ, one half of AUGMENTS and co-founder of DnB Seoul. We sat down with him and he talked us through the night that started it all, how DnB Seoul took the music beyond the people already in it, what Seoul crowds go for, the channels and radio keeping the scene connected, and some advice for anyone starting out.

This is Seoul, in HWAN's words.

Who is HWAN

Who is HWAN? Tell us a bit about yourself.

I was just an ordinary person who enjoyed the humanities, majoring in English Language and Literature and Philosophy. After spending some time trying to figure out what I wanted to do, I eventually decided to commit myself to music, something I had felt a strong passion and instinct for since I was young.

Now I'm part of a drum and bass duo called AUGMENTS, producing and DJing drum and bass, while also running DnB Seoul.

Tell us about DnB Seoul. What do you think it does for the drum and bass community in Seoul? Do you have a goal in mind of something you'd like to achieve with it?

Korea already has more than 20 years of drum and bass history.

People like Kuma and DJ Beejay from MixMix, who we now work with, Bass Attack, who we held a Face to Face battle event with, and MCs like Jake Pains have been playing drum and bass and throwing parties for a long time.

There were also active drum and bass crews and bass music venues like Rabbit Hole and Mushroom long before DnB Seoul existed. Because of them, even if the community was small, there were still people listening to drum and bass and enjoying the culture together.

But what I felt the Korean drum and bass scene had been missing was the ability to expand.

I believe people eventually get tired if they don't feel like they're improving or getting something meaningful back from what they do. For DJs, I think making better sets, playing those sets at better parties, and getting reactions from more people gives you a sense that you're actually growing. And of course, once your skill reaches a certain level, getting paid for it becomes important too.

Until now, the Korean drum and bass scene was attractive to the small number of people who already knew it, but I don't think it did enough to tell people outside of that circle that this music even existed.

We simply started doing that. We translated drum and bass memes, made DJ videos, and made Reels explaining the music and the culture. We also tried to find unusual places and throw parties that might make people a little more curious.

Then people started telling us that they experienced the rush of drum and bass for the first time through us. Just like I did when I first found it.

I want to keep that sense of expansion going. Not only for the people who already love drum and bass, but also to find the people who might fall in love with it in the future. So I want to keep making content, events and music that are easy for more people to approach. I want more people to listen to drum and bass, some of them to start DJing it, and some of them to eventually start making it themselves.

The first night

People often associate falling in love with drum and bass with a particular first night of hearing it at a venue. Do you remember that experience for you? Who was performing that night?

100%.

It was May 2024. Before that night, I barely even knew the name "drum and bass." Zander, my British friend who eventually started DnB Seoul with me, had mentioned it to me before, but I had just let it go in one ear and out the other, so I didn't even remember it.

One day, that friend told me a very big UK label was coming to Korea and asked me to go with him. The ticket was a little more expensive than the usual club entry fee in Korea at the time, so I hesitated for a bit, but I said yes.

And that night, I completely fell into Anaïs' set.

For an hour, I almost forgot about myself and just kept jumping and reacting to the music. It was one of the purest experiences of complete immersion I've ever had in my life, and it was the first time I had felt that through dance music. I had obviously enjoyed music before, but nothing had pulled me in deeply enough to make me forget myself like that.

From that day, I started properly looking into drum and bass, and I found out that Korea's drum and bass scene had existed in a very small form for a long time.

That felt strange to me. I thought my taste was pretty mainstream, so if this music could pull me in that hard, I felt like plenty of other Korean people would like it too. I had this almost blind gut feeling that if more Korean people knew about this music and actually experienced it, some of them would start loving drum and bass just like I did.

That's how I started DnB Seoul with Zander.

The paper factory rave

Any favourite moments from DnB Seoul? DJ performances, events or radio shows. We know you like throwing parties in interesting places!

The paper factory rave we threw in the early days is probably the one I remember most.

Back then, we really knew nothing. We didn't know how the club scene worked, and we didn't know how unprepared Korean laws and systems were for this kind of culture. (In Korea, there's no realistic legal framework that defines spaces where people gather to listen to music and dance.)

We didn't know what kind of speakers we needed, how many staff we needed, how to film the event, or even where we were supposed to find a space.

To find one, we literally walked around factories and shops in Euljiro one by one, explained what we wanted to do to the owners, and asked, "Would it be possible to throw a rave here?"

At the time, we were basically a newborn team. All we had done was post drum and bass memes, recommend tracks, and make a few Reels explaining why we wanted to throw parties in unusual places.

But around 80 people still came all the way to a neighbourhood that wasn't Itaewon or Hongdae, and spent the whole night in a space playing nothing but drum and bass from start to finish.

I still remember all of us already being completely exhausted before the event had even started. Even so, everything we did that day felt strangely meaningful. I think it was because it was the first time we saw that what we were doing could actually bring people together.

The Seoul sound

What are the current sub-genre trends in Seoul at the moment? Do you plan your sets around the trends, or is there a specific sub-genre you enjoy playing the most?

Right now, I think Jump Up and Dancefloor are probably the strongest.

From what I've seen, Korean drum and bass fans react much more strongly to high-energy styles than to softer Liquid. Maybe people who prefer softer music naturally end up in other genres, while the people who want heavy energy and bass are the ones who gather around the bass music scene in Korea.

Personally, I like strong and dark Jump Up like the music from KRITIKAL or Rova. At the same time, I also really like the kind of Rollers you often hear on releases from V Recordings, Sofa Sound Bristol or Love For Low Frequencies.

When I build a set, I try to find a balance between what people want and what I personally like, rather than just pushing my own taste.

And whenever I can, I try to prepare as many fresh double drops as possible. Sometimes a track that everyone already knows and another track that people haven't really discovered yet fit together so well that they sound like they were one tune from the beginning.

I get a huge rush when I find combinations like that, and it feels even better when the crowd actually goes crazy for them.

Can it keep growing?

People don't tend to think of Korea when they think of drum and bass. Do you think that will change in the future? Why?

I think it can. But for that to happen, we need a lot more drum and bass producers and DJs than we have now.

I see modern K-Pop as dance music built around the very strong theme of idols. Before that, Korea was mostly on the receiving end of musical influence from the West. K-Pop feels like a new and massive movement where Korea has started influencing the West in return.

Since K-Pop uses forms from many different kinds of dance music, drum and bass also appears in it from time to time. But I don't think that alone means Korean drum and bass itself has gained influence. The main character in K-Pop is the idol, not the genre.

So I think we need more producers making music that is closer to what drum and bass is now. I know that sounds a little vague, but by "drum and bass now," I mean the things many people commonly think of when they hear drum and bass: speed, energy, strong sub-bass and mid-bass, and so on. We need producers making that kind of music in Korea too.

There are examples of individual producers helping grow the drum and bass scene of an entire country. DJ Marky in Brazil, Makoto in Japan and Rova in New Zealand are examples. But I don't think Korea has had a drum and bass producer with that level of international influence yet.

If people are going to see Korea as having its own drum and bass scene, separate from drum and bass simply appearing as one element of K-Pop, then artists like that need to emerge. I want to bring those people together, and at the same time I'm trying to become one of them myself.

If these small movements happening now can turn into a bigger wave, I think it's definitely possible.

HIME ISNOTDEAD at Mushroom, Seoul, filmed by Indeks Korea

Korea is extremely well known for K-Pop. Does this lead to any influence in drum and bass production, perhaps with ideas for samples and remixes?

Absolutely.

Just now, I might have sounded like I was complaining a little about drum and bass only being used as one element of K-Pop. But ironically, I also think connecting K-Pop with drum and bass is one of the easiest and fastest ways to expose the Korean public to drum and bass right now.

As soon as you put a vocal, melody or cultural reference that people already know over the rhythm and energy of drum and bass, the genre becomes much easier for people to get into. And this isn't only true for drum and bass. The same thing applies to many other kinds of dance music.

So I think K-Pop can be a very powerful bridge for introducing drum and bass to more people in Korea.

Keeping the scene connected

Do you have any local DJs you want to highlight?

Rather than picking a few specific DJs, I'd rather mention some channels that bring Korean DJs together and shine a light on the scene itself. I think that's a good way to highlight the organisers and video artists working for the drum and bass and bass music scenes, while also introducing a lot of the DJs who appear on those channels.

One is Indeks Korea. It's run by video artist Jordan, and the goal is to bring local DJs and producers who you would normally only see inside clubs onto more people's screens. At the same time, it captures the unique character and atmosphere of Korean artists and spaces through video.

The other is Basscamp, ran by workman247. It's a channel that archives DJing in Korea, capturing DJs naturally expressing their own music and identity in a free and relaxed environment.

By following these channels, you'll be able to discover plenty of Korean drum and bass DJs with their own unique sounds and personalities.

Seoul Community Radio and people like DJ Bowlcut live at the heart of the history of the dance music scene in Korea. We noticed you've played for them in the past. What was your introduction to it? How impactful would you say it is on the scene?

Drum and bass is still definitely a niche culture in Korea. That's obviously true from a mainstream point of view, but I think it's still true even within the underground. Bass music culture, including drum and bass, is growing, but hip-hop, techno and house still feel like the bigger scenes.

Drum and bass also has such a strong identity that making crossover events with other genres can be harder than you might expect. Because of that, I sometimes feel like the drum and bass scene is a little isolated from other music scenes. That's also why I really appreciate people who respect the drum and bass scene and want to do something together with us.

SCR was one of the teams that gave us a place to play drum and bass and have fun together from the very early days of DnB Seoul.

If you ask me how much impact they have on the scene, I'd say it's obviously huge. For more than ten years, they've been making events and content across many different genres in the Korean underground, while consistently bringing important international artists to Korea.

Rather than being a platform for one specific genre, I think SCR is one of the few important hubs connecting the Korean underground dance music scene to the outside world.

HWAN with Hijvc Keyd at Seoul Community Radio

Starting out

What advice would you give someone in Seoul who wants to start DJing drum and bass?

The drum and bass scene in Seoul is still small, but it is slowly growing. In the past, international artists touring East Asia would often only stop in Japan, but now more of them are starting to visit Korea as well. K-Pop and hip-hop are also using drum and bass more and more.

But there still aren't enough places where you can regularly play and enjoy drum and bass. DnB Seoul and other teams sometimes recruit new DJs through open calls, but the number of opportunities is still limited.

So if you want to be a drum and bass DJ in Korea, being good at DJing alone might not be enough. You may have to look for your own chances to play, meet people, and sometimes even gather people yourself and throw your own party.

Even so, if you're starting because you genuinely love drum and bass, I don't think you'll regret it. Out of all the music cultures I've experienced in Korea, the drum and bass community feels like the group of people who most purely lose themselves in the energy and excitement of the music itself.
